INTRODUCTION

In the Name of the Father and of the Son and of the Good and Holy Spirit, One God, Almighty and Eternal, world without end, His Excellency, Hadrian Mâr Élijah Bar Israël, by the Grace of God, Nazarani Metropolitan, to the people of God everywhere, rich and poor gathered together, peace!
The following is the standard Qadish (or doxology in Greek), which begin every service in the Nazarani Rîte, and have existed in their present form since the 2nd Century, prior to the Hellenisation of the Church.
God’s greatest blessings be upon you and all of yours, this day and always. Amen and Amen.

HOW TO USE THIS TEXT

This book was written with the idea in mind that regular people should be given exemplary access to the language of Jesus Christ and His Holy Apostles and to the most ancient and authentic forms of Christian worship. Because we support the development of Christian culture and the concept of Aramaic fluency among Christians, it is common that large swathes of our services are conducted in this most ancient and venerable language. However, we have followed the guide post of the Apostles, who determined that in mixed language congregations, where someone would speak in a different language than spoken by everyone, that a translation is given.

It is our hope that with a little bit of practice, you can learn to follow along, no matter which language is being used. Always feel free to sing the responses you know, in the language that best suits you, and do not worry about continuity with the others around you.

As with all of our liturgical taksi (service books) the text is presented so that reading left-to-right, the WHO is first. This “WHO” is the person who will sing the verse, whether that is the Celebrant, Priest, Deacon, Officiant, or the People. After the WHO is the “ARAMAIC TEXT”, which has been taken from or amalgamated out of the original source documents. This is followed on the same line by the VERNACULAR CHANT, which is the accepted translation into the vernacular language. For ease of reading the VERNACULAR CHANT to be sung by the congregation are in bold, while the clergy’s sections are printed in the regular text. Under the ARAMAIC TEXT is the TRANSLITERATION OF THE ARAMAIC TEXT, which is intended to provide the reader unfamiliar with the Aramaic script, the ability to quickly read, chant and follow along, if all or part of the service is sung in the original language. Under this is the LITERAL TRANSLATION of the text from the Aramaic into the Vernacular language.
